WORLD CUP EXPLAINED

Why was France vs Iraq delayed for nearly two hours?

France's World Cup match against Iraq did not resume after the normal halftime break because thunderstorms and lightning moved close to the Philadelphia stadium.

The issue was not ordinary rain. Lightning creates a direct safety risk for players, officials, staff and spectators, so the second half could not begin until the area met the required safety conditions.

The delay lasted close to two hours. France eventually returned to the field and won 3-0.

Why couldn't they simply play through the rain?

Football matches can continue in heavy rain if the pitch remains playable. Lightning is different.

An exposed stadium includes thousands of people, metal structures and open playing space. Once strikes are detected within the safety radius, the event must pause.

The priority is not keeping the television schedule. It is getting everyone away from the immediate lightning risk.

Why did the delay last so long?

The commonly used local safety procedure requires a clear period after the most recent nearby lightning strike.

If a new strike is detected before that period ends, the clock starts again. A storm that keeps producing lightning can therefore turn a 30-minute minimum wait into a much longer interruption.

That is what happened in Philadelphia.

What was the score when play stopped?

France led 1-0 at halftime after Mbappé scored in the 14th minute.

When the match resumed, Mbappé scored again. France completed a 3-0 win, and the two goals moved him to 16 career World Cup goals.

Was the match close to being abandoned?

Organizers had to keep assessing the weather, but there is no simple rule that says a match must be abandoned after exactly one or two hours.

The decision depends on local conditions, the forecast, stadium operations and whether the teams can safely return. In this case, play resumed.

Was this a normal halftime break?

No.

The players had to wait, receive updates and then warm up again before the second half. For viewers, it looked like an unusually long halftime. Operationally, it was a weather suspension.
